Moores Opera Center, 2007–2008 Season

(ticket information)

A Double bill of two one-act comic operas:

Les Mamelles de Tiresias

by Francis Poulenc
Sung in French

October 19-22, 2007

Les Mamelles de Tiresias

Turnabout is fair play in this wacky surrealist comedy by France’s wittiest composer of song. On the French Riviera, a disgruntled wife swaps places with her husband, who proceeds to have 40,000 babies in one day! Fast paced music with a touch of the French music hall will lift your spirits to new heights. If Maurice Chevalier could be crossed with Salvador Dali this would be the result. Houston premiere.

Gianni Schicchi

by Giacomo Puccini
Sung in Italian

October 19-22, 2007

Gianni Schicchi

At the dawn of the Renaissance, the Donati family has been disinherited. They will stop at nothing to get what they think they deserve. But what Gianni Schicchi thinks they deserve is another thing altogether. Amid all the mayhem is Puccini’s most beloved aria “O mio babbino caro”.

Set in New York’s Little Italy, a young woman miraculously receives the stigmata every Good Friday. But is she a really a saint? This searing drama probes the mysteries of love, doubt, and faith, with a climactic scene deep in the subways of New York City. We’re proud to honor the late Gian Carlo Menotti with this production. The Saint of Bleecker Street received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for best play, the Music Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 1955. Houston premiere.

A Wedding

by William Bolcom

April 4-7, 2008

Wedding cake

Everyone loves a wedding, but a lot of unexpected and very funny things can happen.

Premiered to riotous acclaim by the Chicago Lyric Opera in the 2004-05 season, this comedy is based on the film of the same name by the legendary director Robert Altman.  The New Yorker said “Bolcom can knock out a Gershwinish tune like nobody’s business”. Don’t miss the operatic event of the year and our first opera written in the 21st century! Houston premiere.
