Floot Fire

June 16-20, 2008

Floot Fire is designed to educate and inspire flutists through a diverse curriculum that covers many aspects of flute performance. Floot Fire combines an informal, comfortable, and supportive atmosphere with teaching, performance, and artistic standards of the highest caliber. Students of all levels of proficiency are eligible to participate.

Class Levels

There are three flexible levels of classes in which the students may be placed: Allegro - for flutists who have played at least one year; Vivace - primarily for students entering the 9th or 10th grade; and Presto - generally for students entering the 11th or 12th grade and graduated seniors.

Enrollment Options

Full time (all day): Two or more masterclass performances, chamber music, flute choir, a 30 minute private lesson, and electives
Part time (afternoon only): One or more masterclass performance, chamber music, and flute choir

Schedule

Our days include masterclasses, chamber music, floot choir, electives, and recitals. A complete schedule will be mailed to the students in early June.

Master Class

In masterclass students will work on musical interpretation, tone, stage presence, relaxation techniques, and much more! Students should be prepared to perform at least twice in class. It is preferred that different selections, or different sections from the same piece be performed. Students must provide their piano parts. Unaccompanied works are acceptable.

Elective Periods

These two periods allow students to choose courses of study that interest them most and suit their specific needs. They will be led by our artist/teachers and by other respected flutists from the Houston area.

Advanced Piccolo Improve your piccolo skills with this class. This class is for high school students with 2 or more years of experience. Please indicate if you can provide your own instrument. Limit 8.
Beginner Piccolo Learn the first steps in playing the piccolo. This class is for students of any age with little or no piccolo experience. Please indicate if you can provide your own instrument. Limit 8.
Big Flutes Learn how to hold and play the alto flute and the bass flute. Instruments will be provided. Limit 8.
Bountiful Breaths Expand and free your breath in a creative way with a variety of techniques using fun “breathing toys” like the breath builder and breathing bag. Learn finger breaths, yoga breathing, and more. Students will be given a temporary breathing bag. If you do not have a breath builder please purchase one at www.musciansfriend.com.
Intro to Body Mapping Learn how to become a fluid, balanced performer with little tension. Students will be introduced to the concepts behind Alexander Technique and Body Mapping. Students should purchase "Body Mapping for Flutists" by Leah Pearson (available at www.fluteworld.com and www.flute4u.com).
Irish Flute Learn to play traditional Irish flute music on the penny whistle. There is an additional $12 fee (due at registration) for the purchase of instruments for this class. Limit 10.
Orchestral Excerpts Learn to play the top 12 excerpts that are required at orchestral flute auditions.
Sightreading Made Simple
(MS)
Discover techniques to improve music reading skills and effective ways to learn new music quickly.
Winning Performance
(MS/HS)
Discover audition techniques to become a successful, competitive flute player. Concepts include positive visualization, relaxation techniques, practice strategies and more.
Recitals

Faculty recitals take place daily at 1:30. The Grand Finale concert featuring all Floot Fire participants takes place on Friday evening. All concerts are free and open to the public.

Solo Competition

Floot Fire Houston will not participate in the Floot Fire, Inc. solo competition this year.

Registration and Tuition

Deadline for regular registration is June 2, 2008 and tuition must be included. A $25 fee will be charged for late registration between June 2 and June 16. Tuition fees are 100% refundable until June 2; 50% refundable until June 9; and nonrefundable after June 12. Payment may be made by check or by credit card. Supply fees and late fees are nonrefundable.

Location

Floot Fire will be held at the University of Houston Moores School of Music. To reach the University of Houston from I-45 southbound, take the Cullen exit. From I-45 northbound take the Elgin/Cullen/Lockwood exit. Use UH Entrance 16, off Cullen to reach the Moores School of Music building.

Meals and Parking

Students must bring a sack lunch. Visitor parking is located directly across from the building and costs $4 a day.

Discounts and Scholarships

All State and Area players can attend Floot Fire Houston tuition free! (A $25 supply fee will be charged.) Students who register and attend both the Floot Fire-Houston and the UH Cougar Band Camp will receive a $50 discount for each camp. Some need based scholarships are available.
