Tom Bennett, Associate Professor of music, conducts the Moores School of Music Wind Ensemble. During his tenure, the ensemble has performed at TMEA and at the Southwest Regional Convention of the College Band Directors National Association. In 2003, the International Grainger Society awarded him the Grainger Medallion for Distinct Contribution for his work on a CD of transcriptions made by Percy Grainger. This CD (Mark, 4835-MCD) is the fourth in a Grainger series begun by Eddie Green and the Moores School Wind Ensemble. A CD of the band music of Vittorio Giannini was released internationally on the Naxos label in 2006.
A native of Lubbock, Mr. Bennett received his BM at Texas Tech University and his MM at Southern Methodist University. Prior to his appointment at UH, he taught in the Spring, Lubbock, Round Rock, LaMarque, Plano, Spring Branch, and Richardson school districts. From 1988-1994, he was Director of Bands at East Texas State University. His J.J. Pearce and Spring High School bands were honored with appearances at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in 1986 and 1996, respectively. At Pearce, his band was named 5A Honor Band in 1984, and at Spring, his band was named runner-up for the 5A Honor Band in 1994. He was recipient of the Leadership and Achievement Award from TMEA and the Ross Perot Outstanding Teacher Award from Richardson ISD. In 2005, the Texas Bandmasters Association named him Texas Bandmaster of the Year.
Mr. Bennett is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, Texas Music Education Association, and Texas Bandmasters Association. |
