Soprano Cynthia Clayton, Assistant Professor at the Moores School of Music, is a favorite of audiences throughout the United States, having performed leading roles with New York City Opera, Dallas Opera, San Diego Opera, Orlando Opera, Utah Opera, Central City Opera, Arizona Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Cleveland Opera, Knoxville Opera, Anchorage Opera, and Opera San José, where she began her professional career as a Principal Artist in Residence. Her concert credits include performances with the San Jose Symphony, The New West Symphony (CA), Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, Symphony of the Mountains (TN), the Aspen Music Festival Concert Orchestra, the Mendocino Music Festival Orchestra, Apollo Opera, Texas Opera Theatre, Guild Opera of Los Angeles, Masterworks Chorale of San Mateo, and the Northern California Wagner Society.

Ms. Clayton’s New York City Opera credits include the title role of Madama Butterfly, Countess Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, and both Mimì and Musetta in La bohème. Her active repertoire also includes the title roles of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, Janacek’s Jenufa, and Floyd’s Susannah, as well as Nedda (Pagliacci), Marguerite (Faust), Violetta (La Traviata), Liù (Turandot), Micaëla (Carmen), and Mozart heroines Donna Anna and Fiordiligi. Concert credits include the soprano solos in the Requiem masses of Verdi, Mozart and Brahms, Britten’s War Requiem, Mozart’s Solemn Vespers, Debussy’s La Damoiselle Élue, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and Barber’s Knoxville, Summer of 1915.

This season, Ms. Clayton will perform her first Tosca, with Utah Opera, and will make her debut with Houston Grand Opera as Mimì in La bohème in the spring of 2008 (performances on May 1st and 3rd). She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and a Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California.
