Barbara Rose Lange holds the Ph.D in ethnomusicology from the University of Washington and a Master of Viola Performance from the University of Wyoming. She has taught at the University of Houston since 1996.

Eastern Europe is Lange's primary area of research. She is the author of Holy Brotherhood: Romani Music in a Hungarian Pentecostal Church (Oxford, 2003). Lange's articles on Romani (Gypsy) music and Hungarian popular music have appeared in many publications, including the Journal of American Folklore , Ethnomusicology , and the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music . She has also written on ethnomusicology and digital media. Lange's current project concerns free improvisation and the avant-garde music scene in Texas.

Lange's research honors include a Mellon Fellowship, a Fulbright CIES award, and IREX grants.

Lange teaches courses in ethnomusicology and American popular music at the University of Houston, and has organized many world music performances at the Moores School of Music.
