UH Band Honors Dr. William (Bill) Moffit

Dr. William MoffitDr. Moffitt, former director of the UH Cougar Marching Band and Cougar Brass director, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 in Jacksonville, Florida. The UH Band is having a gathering in Dr. Moffitt's honor on Monday, March 10th at 9:45AM in front of the former Band Annex (it's now called the Burdette Keeland Jr. Design and Exploration Center). The service will feature a selection of Dr. Moffit's music and arrangements preformed by current members of the Spirit of Houston Cougar Marching Band.

Dr. William C. (Bill) Moffit is known by our community for his musical passion. He is credited for taking the marching band's storied military-style into its present day marching style. Dr. Moffit pioneered and patented his "Patterns of Motion" for which the high-energy, high-stepping Cougar Marching Band was known during his legendary years at the University of Houston.

As a UH faculty member, Dr. Moffit was nationally recognized as a music arranger. Bands from across the United States and around the world play his music from his Soundpower series. His legacy lived on today. So revered is Dr. Moffit that the UH Band Alumni Association and the Moores School of Music have worked to create the William C. Moffit Chair, an endowed professorship in his honor.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Dr. Moffit's family and loved ones. He will be greatly missed.
