His responsibilities there include conducting the Concert Women's Chorus and University Men's Chorus, teaching undergraduate conducting and rehearsal techniques, and serving as chorus master for some opera productions. He holds the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Choral Conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Auburn University. While pursuing graduate work at UNCG, Dr. Turner was conductor of the Women's Glee Club and Women's Choir, and taught Italian and English diction, undergraduate conducting, and class voice.

Before coming to the University of Houston, Dr. Turner taught high school choral music in the Wake County Public School System of North Carolina, where he conducted five ensembles and taught advanced placement music theory. His ensembles received consistent superior ratings at festival.

Dr. Turner’s research interests include the acoustic balance between chorus and orchestra during combined performances, diction for singers, and music technology. He is a member of the American Choral Directors’ Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Pi Kappa Lambda.
