The Moores School of Music is committed to making transfer as easy as possible. In addition to meeting all requirements for admission to the University of Houston, transfer students, applying as music majors, must pass an audition on their principal instrument or voice and must have a 2.5 minimum grade point average in all music courses attempted. We adhere to the provisions of the state-mandated Field of Study Curriculum for Music, and a link to that document is provided below. For additional information, we have also included a number of topics and links below providing useful information for the transfer student. If there are additional questions, the undergraduate advisor can be contacted at 713-743-3172 or the admissions and scholarship coordinator at 713-743-5934.

APPLICATIONS |
| |
|
All prospective students must fill out two separate applications, one for the Moores School of Music and the other for the University of Houston (links below). The University requires an application fee of $50.00 for domestic students and $75.00 for international students; the School of Music has no application fee. Applicants need to be aware of deadlines as it is very difficult to process late applications.
Occasional confusion arises when students assume that notification of acceptance into the University means they are accepted into the School of Music. Unfortunately, students can meet University standards and not be accepted into the School of Music. Similar confusion can occur when students are notified that they have passed their audition and believe that means they are automatically accepted into the University. Passing the MSM audition does not insure that students have met the academic standards of the University and, if the University denies students acceptance, the School of Music cannot accept them.
To apply to the Moores School of Music, please download this .pdf file, fill in your information, and send it (with all requested documents) to the address listed on the form.

| THEORY & AURAL SKILLS |
| |
Transfer students will be able to transfer four semesters of theory and four semesters of aural skills when grades of C or better have been earned at other Texas colleges or universities. Students do not have to have completed four semesters of theory (or aural skills) in order to transfer credits. We substitute for our own courses any number of lower division theory and aural skills courses as long as a grade of C or better was earned.
Our theory curriculum has recently been redesigned (see courses and descriptions below). One new feature is the series of proficiency exams applicable to all students.
Moores School of Music theory courses are sequential and outlined below. Our program requires that a student who earns a grade below C- in any theory course must repeat that course until a grade of C- or better is earned. In addition, all students must pass any requisite proficiency exams within the specified time frame (see Proficiency Exams below). Because the content of aural skills and group piano are linked to that of the theory courses, a student required to repeat a theory course cannot advance to the next level of aural skills or group piano until the theory deficiency is satisfied.

| PROFICIENCY EXAMS |
| |
|
| |
Transfer students, as well as our native students, must pass the theory and aural skills proficiency exams prerequisite to Theory III (if transferring after two semesters of theory), to Techniques in Music since 1900 (if transferring after three semesters of theory) and to Introduction to Large Forms (after four semesters of theory). Note that the proficiency exam results are valid through the next offering of the course for which they are prerequisite. If a student fails to enroll in that course the next time it is offered, the student must re-take the proficiency exam to qualify for enrollment.
Students, transfer or native, who fail to achieve a score of 70 on any proficiency exam are not required to repeat theory courses in which they received grade of C- or better but must, however, correct their deficiencies. This could happen any number of ways, i.e. studying the textbook and working alone, hiring a tutor or auditing courses as refreshers. The only requirement is that the proficiency exam be passed before enrolling in the next sequential course. (The aural skills sequence also includes several proficiency exams.)
Students transferring four semesters of theory need only pass Theory Proficiency Exam IV and Aural Skills Proficiency Exam IV before registering in MUSI3215, Introduction to Large Forms, a new course required in all BM degree plans.
All theory and aural skills proficiency exams will be offered on audition days, during the week of final exams and again the week before classes begin in August and January. Students will be given the specific testing time in August at the required orientation for transfer students and should contact the undergraduate advisor (713.743.3172) for testing dates. [Sample proficiency exams will soon be available on the web page for the theory and composition department (http://www.music.uh.edu/comp-theory).] |

| MUSIC LITERATURE AND MUSIC HISTORY |
| |
Before 2001, the Moores School of Music offered two semesters of music literature and two semesters of music history. However, the curriculum has been changed and music literature has been deleted from our course offerings. It was determined that a four-semester sequence, beginning with MUSI2361, Music and Culture, and followed with three semesters of music history, would give our students a better foundation in history and literature. Students wishing to transfer three hours of lower division music literature (allowable in the Field of Study Curriculum in Music) will need to submit a copy of the syllabus, a UH General Petition and a copy of the UH Transfer Evaluation Form. This will facilitate the best decision for an appropriate course substitution.
Because our four courses are sequential, students must earn a grade of C- or better before advancing to the next course. |

APPLIED MUSIC |
| |
Students wishing to become performance majors must pass a sophomore barrier and are often placed on the sophomore level (even if they have sufficient numbers of sophomore credits) their first semester. This gives the student and his/her new teacher a chance to work together before attempting the barrier. If the barrier is passed, the level of study is changed to junior in the subsequent semester. A student who did not pass must make a decision about pursuing a different degree plan or, with the advice of his/her teacher, remain on the sophomore level an additional semester and attempt the barrier again in the next semester. Music education transfer students who have completed two semesters of sophomore applied music would begin their study here at the junior level.
Concurrent enrollment in large ensemble is required of all students enrolled in applied music. This is not a degree requirement but is a School of Music requirement. In any semester students are registered for lessons, they must also register in large ensemble even after completing the number of credits required for their degrees. |
| |
|
|
ENSEMBLE |
| |
Four semesters of large ensemble will be accepted in transfer as degree applicable.
All students must audition for ensemble placement at the beginning of each semester. Choral students should contact Dr. Betsy Cook Weber (713.743.3194 or by email); string students, Prof. Franz Krager (713.743.3189 or by email); wind and percussion, Prof. Tom Bennett (731.743.3190 or by email) or Prof. David Bertman (731.743.3183 or by email); and jazz students, Prof. Noe Marmolejo (713.743.3191 or by email). Students interested in auditioning for opera roles should contact Prof. Buck Ross (713.743.3162 or by email). Some junior-level keyboard students are allowed to fulfill their large ensemble co-enrollment requirement through accompanying assignments. For questions concerning accompanying requirements, contact Prof. Timothy Hester (713.743.3309 or by email). |

RECITAL ATTENDANCE POLICY |
| |
The following statement appears in the UH Undergraduate Catalog: |
| |
| |
Programs covering a wide range of literature and varied media of performance are presented each semester by faculty and by students. All music majors must attend a total of 96 recitals. Music education majors will be exempt from recital attendance the semester of student teaching and need only accumulate a total of 84 recitals. Students must attend a minimum of four Tuesday recitals each semester they are enrolled in nine or more hours until their total recital requirement has been met. To request preparation of a degree plan or schedule a junior recital, students must have attended 60 recitals. To schedule a senior recital, students must have attended 72 recitals. Graduation paperwork will not be processed until the total requirement has been met. Students should attend 12 recitals each semester to meet these requirements.
Only Moores School of Music sponsored recitals will be counted for credit. Performances in which the student is a participant will not count toward recital attendance. Attendance is generally taken electronically with the CougarOne card. Occasionally, however, students will be asked to turn in recital programs within two weeks of the performance date as proof of attendance. Please contact the Undergraduate Advisor for clarifying details. |
|
| |
Students record their attendance at many concerts or recitals by swiping their student ID card (Cougar 1 Card) before and after the events. At other times, copies of programs are turned in at the front desk (name and student #s on the front) and credit is entered into the database manually. Based on an estimate of the number of semesters required for degree completion, the total number of recital credits required for transfer students will be off set appropriately
It is important that this requirement be met and, unfortunately, there are occasions when students have completed all other degree requirements but failed to graduate because recital attendance had been neglected. |
| |
|
|
GROUP PIANO |
| |
Credits in class piano (group piano here) are required in all degree plans. Students wishing to transfer credits should contact Betty Shaw (713.743.3188) and arrange to play for her. She will evaluate your proficiency and determine how many semesters of study can be transferred. |
| |
|
|
PIANO PROFICIENCY |
| |
Students pursuing curricula in Teacher Certification, Music Business or Music and Religion are required to pass a piano proficiency exam before graduation. Please check with Betty Shaw (713.743.3188) and determine whether or not your current school has an articulation agreement with the Moores School of Music, or arrange to take the MSM piano proficiency exam. |
| |
|
|
INSTRUMENTAL METHODS CLASSES |
| |
Approval for transfer of methods courses is rarely granted, however, if you wish to petition for approval, submit a UH General Petition form and a copy of the course syllabus. (General Petition forms are available in the music office.) |
| |
|
|
CORE COMPLETE |
| |
It is not generally in the student's best interest to transfer to the Moores School of Music core complete. Two-year college counselors often push this but, in order for music majors to have any chance of degree completion in four years, they must stay in sequence with theory, aural skills and class piano courses. If the general education core is spread out through the senior year, as it is for our native students, music degrees can be completed more easily in four years or, in the case of many music education students, five years. |
| |
|
|
ASSOCIATE DEGREES |
| |
Frequently students assume that completion of an Associate of Arts in Music guarantees them acceptance into the Moores School of Music. This is not the case and completion of an AA degree offers no advantage in our acceptance process although completion does demonstrate a student's ability to commit to and complete a course of study. |

MINORS IN MUSIC |
| |
| Transfer students who are not accepted as music majors can often apply two years of study toward a music minor at the University of Houston in one of two areas, music theory or music literature/history. Each requires 21 semester hours in music, of which at least nine must be advanced and taken in residence. A 2.00 minimum grade point average is required in all minor courses attempted at the University of Houston . All courses to be applied to the minor, including transfer courses, must be approved by the School of Music . |

PREMIUM TUITION AND THREE-PEAT |
| |
| Below is the University policy developed in response to state law. Transfer students are those most likely to be caught in this unfortunate circumstance and need to be fully aware of the issue. |
| |
| |
In accordance with state legislation, University of Houston students will be assessed premium tuition, at the out-of-state rate, for any semester hours over specified caps. Students entering a public institution for the first time in Fall 2006 or later who attempt 30 or more semester credit hours beyond the hours required to complete their degrees will be charged premium tuition at out-of-state tuition rates for the hours in excess of 30.
Please note that hours from all courses in which a student was enrolled at any Texas public institution of higher education, community college or 4-year public institution, are counted for the 30-hour cap whether or not the hours are accepted for transfer credit at UH.
In addition, recent legislation impacts funding rates for students based on the number of times they attempt particular courses. Texas residents attempting the same course for a third time since Fall 2002 will be charged premium tuition at out-of-state tuition rates for that course beginning fall 2006. Courses that may be repeated for credit because they involve different or more advanced course content each time they are taken, include individual music lessons, music performance and ensembles. |
