Concert Chorale to Compete in Prestigious U.K. Choir Festival

2009 Choir

The Moores School of Music’s Concert Chorale, under the direction of Betsy Cook Weber, has been selected to compete in the Llangollen International Musical Eiseddfod in Wales July 6-12, 2009. This festival is one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious choral festivals. Since 1947, Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod has attracted the world’s most gifted vocalists and dancers for a week of music. Star alumni of Llangollen include Luciano Pavarotti, who competed with his father at the event in 1955, and Placido Domingo, who made his professional debut in the United Kingdom there.

Continental Airlines LogoThis international singing summit will indeed be a first for the university’s chorale, but the student vocalists remain undaunted as they will be judged against thousands of competing groups. As they prepare to travel to the competition, the Concert Chorale gratefully acknowledges the generous support of Continental Airlines. (Mike Emery)

MSM Granted Re-accreditation

We are pleased to announce that the National Association of Schools of Music has granted re-accreditation to the University of Houston's Moores School of Music. It is especially noteworthy that no program deferments were required. it is common for the vast majority of re-accreditation applications of NASM member institutions to be deferred until various deficiencies have been remedied. Thus, we in the Moores School are especially proud of our accomplishment.

The re-accreditation process requires that each NASM member institution undertake a thorough self-study of its curricula, faculty credentials, budget, planning, and facilities every ten years (this was a two-year process for MSM that involved both music administrators and a number of our faculty). In spring 2008, a three-member NASM visiting team was in residence at UH for three days. They visited classes and rehearsals, observed lessons, reviewed the school's programs, met separately with students and faculty, audited the school's academic and financial records, and attended a student recital with performers that represented a cross-section of academic levels and program areas. The subsequent visitors' report acknowledged the school's excellence in performance and program offerings, as well as its faculty and administration.

Robinson and Ortiz Win First and Second Place in Organ Competition

Jose Reyes Ortiz

Daryl Robinson and Jose Reyes Ortiz won first and second place, respectively, at the 38th Annual William C. Hall Pipe Organ Competition in San Antonio on March 7, 2009. Both undergraduate students are from the studio of Robert Bates.

The William C. Hall Pipe Organ Competition was founded as the "San Antonio Pipe Organ Competition" in 1970 at University Presbyterian Church, largely through the efforts of Mr. Hall who originally conceived it out of his great love of church music. His purpose was to ensure the future of organ music by encouraging the study of organ by students who would later become professional organists in churches. Following his death, as a tribute to him, the title of the competition was officially changed in 1986 to reflect his name.

The full-day competition is held each Spring in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio and has gained a reputation as one of the most outstanding organ competitions in the country. Contestants of both graduate and undergraduate status are limited to organ students from Texas universities.
